Best Time to Visit St. John, USVI: A Month-by-Month Guide

Weather, crowds, prices, and trade winds — when to go to St. John and what to expect every month of the year. Our honest recommendations from someone who lives here.

St. John has two real seasons: high season (mid-December to mid-April) when the weather is perfect and the island is busy, and everything else. Within "everything else" there is a lot of nuance — here is the month-by-month breakdown.

December — March: The classic window

Average daytime highs in the low 80s, water around 79°F, near-zero rain, steady trade winds. This is also peak season pricing (often 2× off-season rates) and you need to book villas and rental cars 4–6 months ahead. The north-shore beaches see cruise crowds on weekdays.

April: The sweet spot

Our favorite month. Weather is still dry and breezy, crowds drop off after Easter, and prices drop ~25% from peak. The St. John Carnival in late June/early July is fun, but April is the calmest "perfect weather" window.

May: Shoulder season starts

Still dry, water warming up, prices noticeably lower. The trade winds slow down, so sailing day-trips get glassier. Restaurants are easier to get into.

June — August: Hot but quiet

Highs hit the high 80s with humidity. The water is 84°F and silky. Brief afternoon rain showers are common. Crowds are mostly families on summer break + Carnival visitors. Hurricane season officially opens June 1 but the real risk window is August–October.

September — October: The cheapest, riskiest months

The deepest discounts and the highest hurricane risk. Some restaurants close for renovations. If you're flexible and travel-insured, this is the time to get a 4-bedroom villa for the price of a hotel.

November: Comeback month

Hurricane risk drops fast after mid-October. November is reliably beautiful, prices haven't jumped to peak yet, and Thanksgiving week is the year's first big-booking week.

Our recommendation

  • Best weather + value: Mid-November or April.
  • Best for honeymooners who want guaranteed sun: February.
  • Best for families on a budget: Early June.
  • Avoid if you hate crowds: President's Week (mid-Feb), Spring Break (last two weeks of March), Christmas-to-New-Year.
