Eloping & Small Weddings on St. John, USVI: The Real Logistics

A practical guide to eloping or hosting a small wedding on St. John — the marriage license (no US passport needed), beach permits in the National Park, officiants, and how a villa makes it simple.

St. John is one of the easiest places in the world for a US couple to elope or host a small wedding. No passport needed, no residency requirement, no waiting once your paperwork lands. Here's how it actually works.

The marriage license

File an application with the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. You can do this by mail, email, or in person. Required: a completed Form I-A, $200 license fee, copies of government photo ID for both partners, and (if previously married) divorce decrees or death certificates.

There's an 8-day waiting period from when the court receives your application until the license can be issued. Most couples mail the paperwork 3–4 weeks ahead so the waiting period has elapsed by the time they arrive. Once you're on-island, pick up the license at the courthouse and you're cleared.

Beach ceremonies in the National Park

If you want to be married on Trunk Bay, Hawksnest, Maho, or any other beach inside Virgin Islands National Park, you need a Special Use Permit ($100, file at least 4 weeks ahead). Group sizes are capped — typically 25 people at Trunk Bay's designated wedding spot — and chairs/arches require advance approval. The National Park website has the application; it's straightforward.

Beaches outside park boundaries (Honeymoon, which is technically a concession area, plus most south-shore beaches) don't require the permit but may have their own rules.

Officiants

Any officiant licensed in the USVI can perform the ceremony — ministers, judges, and a small group of non-denominational officiants who specialize in destination weddings. Booking direct, you'll pay $300–$600 for the ceremony. Most can also coordinate vows, music, and the legal signing of the license at the same time.

Doing it from a villa

The simplest setup for a small (2–12 person) wedding is to rent a villa with a great view, marry on the deck or pool terrace, and skip the permit, the chair rentals, and the weather-on-a-public-beach risk. At Sunset Villa, the rooftop tiki bar has a 220° ocean view and works as a private ceremony space; we can recommend officiants, photographers, and a small-event chef.

The best months

Late February through April: dry, warm, calm. November and early December also excellent. Avoid late August through October (hurricane peak and humidity). See our best time to visit guide for the full month-by-month.

Frequently asked

›Do you need a passport to get married in the US Virgin Islands?

Not if you're a US citizen — the USVI is US territory, so you just need a government-issued photo ID. Non-US citizens need a passport. There's no residency requirement and no blood test.

›How long does the USVI marriage license take?

There's an 8-day waiting period after the application is filed (waived for residents), but you can mail or email the application in advance so the waiting period elapses before you arrive. License fee is $200, paid to the Superior Court.

›Can you get married on a National Park beach?

Yes — Trunk Bay, Hawksnest, Maho, and several others allow weddings under a Special Use Permit from Virgin Islands National Park. The permit is $100, requires 4 weeks lead time, and limits group size (typically 25 max).

›Do you need a wedding planner?

For a true elopement (just the two of you and an officiant), no — handle the license yourself and book an officiant directly. For anything over 6 people, a local planner is worth the money; they know the permit process, vendors, and weather backup plans.
