St. John is one of the best Caribbean islands for kids: short drive times, calm protected beaches, easy snorkeling that even five-year-olds can do, and almost no nightlife noise to deal with in the evenings. Here's the rhythm that works for most families staying at Sunset Villa.

Day 1 — Arrive, ease in

Land at STT around midday, taxi to Red Hook (45 min), 20-minute car-barge to Cruz Bay, taxi up to the villa. The pool is the day — get the kids in the water, order pizza in from Cruz Bay, watch the sunset from the rooftop. Bedtime by 8 because everyone's still on East Coast time and that's fine.

Day 2 — Honeymoon Beach

Easiest beach day on the island. Drive to the Caneel Bay lot, 15-minute flat walk to Honeymoon Beach, rent chairs and umbrellas at the beach bar. Water is glassy, the sand entry is gradual, there's a snack shack for chicken fingers when the inevitable noon meltdown hits. Be back at the villa for nap by 1pm.

Day 3 — Snorkel + turtles at Maho

Maho Bay is the kid snorkel beach: shallow seagrass meadow that the green sea turtles graze in most mornings, calm protected bay, food truck in the parking lot. Get there by 9, swim until 11, lunch from the truck, home by noon for pool/nap.

Day 4 — Rainy-day or town day

Build in a flex day. If it's blue: Trunk Bay before 10am for the photo, then back to the villa pool. If it's gray: head into Cruz Bay, kids' painting at one of the studios in Mongoose Junction, ice cream at Sam & Jack's, browse the National Park visitor center (free, kid-friendly exhibits on turtles and reef fish).

Day 5 — Day on the boat or Trunk Bay

The signature day. If you've booked a private charter, you'll be on the water by 9 and back by 4 — see our private sailing guide. If not, hit Trunk Bay at sunrise for the snorkel trail (easier for the kids when it's calm and empty), then a slow afternoon back at the villa.

Eating with kids

  • The villa kitchen is the answer 60% of the time. Order from Starfish Market for delivery on arrival day.
  • Cruz Bay: La Tapa (pasta, kid-friendly early), Lime Inn (burgers/quesadillas), High Tide (right on the harbor)
  • Coral Bay: Skinny Legs is a kid institution — outdoor picnic tables, dogs welcome, easy menu

What to actually pack

Sized snorkel gear for each kid (rentals on the island rarely fit children well — bring your own from home), water shoes, a wagon if you have a big crew, and double the sunscreen you think you need. Full list: St. John villa packing list →

When to go with kids

Late February through early May is the sweet spot — warm but not humid, calm water, holiday crowds gone. Skip late June through October (heat + hurricane season). Read more in our best time to visit guide.

Frequently asked

›Is St. John a good family vacation?

Yes — calm shore-entry beaches, no need for a passport, US dollars and US cell coverage, and a national park full of easy hikes. It's the simplest Caribbean trip for American families.

›What's the best beach in St. John for young kids?

Maho Bay. The water is shallow for a long way out, almost always calm, and turtles regularly graze a few yards from shore.

›Do I need a car in St. John with kids?

Yes if you want flexibility across the island. Renting a Jeep makes morning beach runs and gear hauling much easier than relying on taxis with kids in tow.
