There are around 40 beaches on St. John. You don't need to see them all, and you definitely shouldn't pick by Instagram. Here's how we send Sunset Villa guests out the door by mood.
For the iconic photo: Trunk Bay
It's famous for a reason. Arrive before 10am or after 3pm, pay the $5 fee, and you'll have the postcard shot of your life from the overlook on the way in. Full guide: Trunk Bay snorkel trail, fees & parking.
For the best snorkel: Waterlemon Cay
Hands down. A 20-minute walk plus a short swim filters out 80% of the tourists. Turtles, eagle rays, healthy coral, 60+ ft visibility. How to do Waterlemon →
For sea turtles: Maho Bay
Calm, shallow, sandy bottom with a seagrass meadow that the green sea turtles graze on most mornings. Easiest turtle encounter on the island. Guide to Maho Bay →
For families with small kids: Honeymoon Beach
Calmest water on the north shore, plus chair-and-umbrella rentals, a small bar, and a 15-minute easy walk from the Caneel Bay parking lot. No reef to worry about underfoot. Honeymoon Beach guide →
For when the north shore is windy: Salt Pond Bay
Winter trades from December–March push swell onto the north shore. Salt Pond, on the south side, stays glassy. Bonus: the Ram Head trail starts at the beach. Salt Pond Bay & Ram Head →
For closest to Cruz Bay: Hawksnest
Five minutes from town, free parking, no fee. Best snorkeling on the right side near the rocks. Slept in? Hawksnest. Hawksnest guide →
For sunset: the rooftop at Sunset Villa
We're biased, but the truth is most St. John beaches face north and the sun sets behind the hills. For an unobstructed sunset over the water, head to a west-facing rooftop, the rooftop bars in Cruz Bay, or the Caneel ruins point. The villa's tiki bar puts you 200 feet above the bay with a 220° view — see the decks.
For a boat-only beach: Hansen Bay / Lovango / Christmas Cove
Some of the best beaches on St. John are only reachable by water. Christmas Cove for the pizza boat, Lovango for lunch and a swim, Hansen Bay's offshore reefs for snorkeling. Our Land & Sea package pairs the villa with a day aboard Stella Blue to get you there.
