The Beaches of St. John, USVI: A Complete Guide

Every beach on St. John worth your time — from the world-famous Trunk Bay snorkel trail to the quiet south-shore coves only locals visit. Maps, parking, snorkeling, and what each beach is best for.

Two-thirds of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park, and that means most of the beaches on this island are protected, undeveloped, and as beautiful as they were when Laurance Rockefeller donated the land in 1956. The water is consistently in the high 70s to mid 80s, visibility is regularly 60+ feet, and you can be on a coral reef within five minutes of leaving your villa.

There are something like 40 beaches on St. John. You don't need to see them all. Below are the four north-shore beaches we send guests to first, plus how to think about the rest.

The Best Beaches in St. John, USVI — By What You Actually Want

Picking a beach on St. John by mood, not by name. The best beaches for snorkeling, families, sunset, quiet, sea turtles, and the iconic photo — with honest tradeoffs for each.

How to pick the right beach for the day

  • First-time visitor, want the iconic shot? Trunk Bay.
  • Easy half-day with kids or no car? Honeymoon Beach.
  • Want to see sea turtles? Maho Bay.
  • Slept in, want sand in 15 minutes? Hawksnest.
  • Windy north shore? Cross to the south — Salt Pond or Lameshur.

Beach etiquette in a National Park

These reefs took two direct Category-5 hits in 2017 (Irma + Maria) and are still recovering. The two things that matter most:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen only. Chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone or octinoxate are illegal in the USVI. Mineral (non-nano zinc) is the rule.
  • Don't touch the coral or the wildlife. Float, look, go home. The turtles will let you watch them if you let them surface in peace.

The south-shore alternative

When the trade winds come up in December–March, the north-shore beaches get choppy and the south-shore beaches go glassy. Salt Pond Bay, Great Lameshur, and Drunk Bay are the swap. You'll need a car (or a long taxi) to get there but you'll often have the beach to yourself.

The boat-only beaches

Some of the best snorkeling and the emptiest beaches on St. John are only reachable by boat — Christmas Cove, Lovango Cay, Hansen Bay's offshore reefs. Our Land & Sea package pairs a villa stay with a private day aboard Stella Blue to get you there.
